The 'New' edition, based on the second edition of 1874. Contemporary binding in green half-leather by 'Bumpus of Oxford Street London' with the bookbinder's stamp in gilt to lower leather turn-in front paste-down, title and decorations in gilt to spine, raised bands spine, top edge gilt, marbled endpapers with some tanning, b&w illus, index, pp xix, 1031. Later ex-library, with markings and a library number stamped in gilt to foot of spine. An ink gift inscription second blank endpaper to Mary Desiree Waller, dated 'Oct 21st, 1907' from her cousins Edward, Hilda and Margaret Poulton (the children of evolutionary biologist, Edward B. Poulton). This book would have been a twenty-first birthday gift to Mary Desiree Waller (b. October 21,1886 - 1956), daughter of the famous physiologist, August Desiree Waller, who recorded the first ECG. She was later to become Professor of Physics at the Royal Free Hospital Medical School in London. Her book "Chladni Figures - a Study in Symmetry" was published posthumously in January 1961.
