First Borzoi Edition (1945). Two volumes complete in publisher's original pictorial dust jackets and matching textured slipcase. Both volumes protected in archival mylar sleeves. Octavos; Vol. I: cxii, 434 pp.; Vol. II: xiii, 401 pp. Bound in publisher's original dark blue-green cloth boards with gilt spine titling and Borzoi blind-stamp on upper boards; top edges stained. Housed in the original publisher's heavy maroon cloth-covered slipcase. Alexis de Tocqueville’s landmark nineteenth-century sociological, legal, and political masterpiece. Prepared to mark the centenary of the original American publication, this definitive Phillips Bradley edition restored Henry Reeve’s translation against Francis Bowen's revision, correcting historic textual corruptions and supplementing the work with comprehensive interpretive essays, historical appendices, and extensive bibliographies. Scarce in this complete state with both pristine original dust jackets and the publisher's slipcase.
