Overall very good condition in a worn but presentable original dust jacket. Jacket shows edge wear, rubbing, and small chips at the corners and spine ends, with scuffing along the folds and light toning to the flaps; original $4.50 price present on the front flap. The book itself remains clean and solid with tight binding; cloth boards bright with light handling wear. Interior pages clean with mild age toning. Former owner’s name written on the front endpaper. First American edition of the Roloff and Lebeck translation, published by Harper & Row in 1965 with an introduction by Thomas Mann. First issued in Germany in 1919 under the pseudonym Emil Sinclair, Demian became one of Hermann Hesse’s most influential novels, exploring themes of psychological awakening, individuality, and spiritual self-discovery. This edition helped introduce a new English-language readership to Hesse during the mid-twentieth-century revival of interest in his work.
