Foundational Work on Delphic Prophecy & Ancient Greek Religion. Delve into the enigmatic heart of ancient Greek religion with this monumental, groundbreaking study by renowned classicist Joseph Fontenrose. Published by the University of California Press, The Delphic Oracle is widely regarded as one of the most rigorous, critical re-examinations of Pythian prophecy ever produced. Fontenrose systematically analyzes the historical, literary, and legendary responses attributed to the Oracle at Delphi, separating late mythic tradition from verifiable historical practice. Complete with an exhaustive, cataloged collection of over 500 Delphic responses, this volume remains an indispensable cornerstone for students and scholars of classical antiquity.
