FULL TITLE: The Decorative Painters and Glaziers Guide; Containing the Most Approved Methods of Imitating Oak, Mahogany, Maple, Rose, Cedar, Coral, and Every Other Kind of Fancy Wood; Verd Antique, Dove, Sienna, Porphyry, White Veined, and Other Marbles; in Oil or Distemper Colour: Designs for Decorating Apartments, in Accordance with the Various Styles of Architecture; with Directions for Stenciling, and Process for Destroying Damp in Walls; Also A Complete Body of Information on the Art of Staining and Painting on Glass; Plans for the Erection of Apparatus for Annealing it; and the Method of Joining Figures Together by Leading, with Examples from Ancient Windows. London, published by Isaac Taylor, 1827. First edition. Quarto. (vi), pp7-332. Illustrated with 85 full page plates of which 30 are hand coloured. These include 19 colour plates illustrating faux wood and marble grains which are heightened with oil paint and gum arabic. A key reference work for Regency-era interior designers, painters and decorators, this well-illustrated practical manual covers a range of fields in great technical detail. Chapters include instructions and examples for the imitation by painting and combing of different kinds of wood and marble grains, painting, gilding and varnishing furniture, the imitation of classical Greek, Roman, Arabesque, Roman and Chinese interior design schemes and ornamentation, mouldings, panelling, painted walls and ceilings, stencilling onto screens and blinds, the creation and construction of stained glass panels, sign painting and considerably more. The whole work is copiously illustrated with many examples in each field. Bound in contemporary reversed calf with blind and gold-tooled decoration to the spine. Minor rubbing to the extremities of the binding. A small and barely perceptible professional repair to the upper few centimetres of the front hinge. As is often the case with this work, this is a well-thumbed copy with dust-soiling, occasional finger-marking and minor staining throughout the text. Additionally, there is a prominent stain affecting the upper part of three text leaves and two plates, a liquid stain affecting the lower corner of one plate and five or six plates towards the end of the volume are fairly foxed. A small number of the wood and marble graining plates have light vestiges of paper adhering to their surface where their tissue guards have previously stuck to them. Otherwise, this is a reasonably clean copy of an uncommon and important reference work with the text block sound and the binding in good condition.
