First edition thus. Notable Harvard Librarian Francis X. Dwyer's Annotated Roscoe Pound Lecture Typescript Pound, Roscoe, (1870-1964). Dwyer, F[rancis] X[avier], (1902-1987). Dean Pound's Lectures and Notes on Criminal Law: Harvard Law School 1934-35. S.l. [Cambridge, MA]: s.n., [1934-1935]. Quarto (11-1/2" x 9"; 29.2 x 22.9cm). 578 leaves, carbon typescript typed on rectos only. Bound in contemporary black springback binder. Moderate rubbing and scuffing to extremities, spine cocked, but binding remains strong and structurally sound. Owner's presentation inscription "F.X. Dwyer/ Notes on Criminal Law/ Dean Pound's Course" to front free endpaper. Copious contemporary handwritten annotations, notes, and underlining internally throughout text. A very good, uniquely annotated copy. $750. * An exceptional institutional association copy documenting the intersection of two prominent legal bibliographers and the pedagogical application of American sociological jurisprudence. The owner and annotator of this substantial 578-leaf compilation, Francis Xavier Dwyer, was not merely a student but an insider to the institution, serving as the Assistant Librarian at the Harvard Law School Library from 1931 to 1941 under the mentorship of Dean Roscoe Pound. Dwyer would later go on to spend decades as a chief librarian at the Law Library of Congress and co-author the widely used textbook, Introduction to the Study of Law. Roscoe Pound, internationally recognized as the founder of "sociological jurisprudence," argued that law must be studied as a dynamic social institution rather than a static body of abstract rules. This massive typescript, likely produced in an extremely limited number for seminar reference or immediate academic circles, provides an unfiltered, primary look at how Pound translated his progressive philosophy into practical criminal law applications during the mid-1930s. Dwyer's copious internal annotations and underlining offer a unique window into how this legal philosophy was filtered, studied, and institutionalized by a close colleague at the height of Harvard Law's influence.…
