Contents fair/good, with some paper ageing and some of the movable illustrations in need of restoration/refitting. 8 hand coloured triple sided illustrated pages (page/movable parts/thin page), with pulls, plates 1,2, 3,5 & 8 working, plate 4 & 7 partly working, plate 6 working, but lacks one head. Not dated but institutions dates are between about 1857 to1865. We think ours is 1860. No inscriptions, black on grey endpapers advertising Dean & Son children s books including Educational and Juvenile works (& one shilling juvenile coloured picture books & movable books to back cover). The 8 triple thick pages of movable images with text to lower side, each of the dogs in human form scenes with a pull that makes heads etc. move. This book the parts of the pages are not glued so you can see the mechanism . Dean and Son was the first publisher to produce movable books on a large scale. their toy books took over the market from the 1840s to the 1880s. Dean opened studios in London with teams of artists who worked to design and craft all kinds of new and complex movables, There are 2 pages with one image and 2 pulls, one to each page . Around 1856, Dean released a series of movable books. The fragility of these Victorian semi-movable book makes them almost impossible to find in good original condition. So this is a fair/good un-restored example of this hard to find movable work. Please see our other children s books including movable & some very rare tiles. Size: 17.5 x 25cm. Approx.
