Content Description. In David to Delacroix: The Rise of Romantic Mythology, art historian Dorothy Johnson examines the transformation of classical mythology in French art from the late eighteenth through the early nineteenth century. Focusing on major artists including Jacques-Louis David, Anne-Louis Girodet, François Gérard, Jean-Auguste-Dominique Ingres, and Eugène Delacroix, Johnson explores how changing ideas in anatomy, biology, physiology, psychology, medicine, archaeology, and intellectual history shaped new representations of myth and the human body. Richly illustrated and interdisciplinary in approach, the book places French Neoclassical and Romantic art within the broader intellectual culture of the period. Published as part of the Bettie Allison Rand Lectures in Art History series, the volume was named a 2011 Choice Outstanding Academic Title. Includes color and black-and-white illustrations, notes, bibliography, and index. Condition Description: Very Good / Very Good Dust Jacket.
