Demy 8vo (8¾" by 5⅝") (221 mm x 142 mm). 287 pp. Black publisher boards with burnt orange panel to spine panel with gilt titles and decoration. Lacking dust jacket. Former owner name to ffep and small Foyles bookseller sticker to front endpaper. Glossy colour frontispiece as well as 54 further illustrations in the text, all glossy. Translated by Frances Hogarth-Gaute. Book has a touch of wear to the fore edge but no other and is very nearly fine. This book reveals the fascinating story of Alois Podhajsky's extraordinary efforts to save the magnificent Lipizzaner horse of the Spanish Riding school during WWII. The book is a testament to one man's devotion to these horses and his willingness to make tremendous sacrifices and exert great effort to preserve the regal bred and an old classical institution along with it. Podhajsky, author of several books on horsemanship, dressage, the Vienna Riding school, and the Lipizzaner was encouraged by his friends to write some account of himself. The result is more a sharing of his personal experience of his professional life than the sort of confessional autobiography we are used to in modern American culture. While I sometimes wondered about aspects of his personal life, such as how he met his wife and her role therein, his navigation through history is fascinating. Not only is this an account of the interrelation of topics very interesting to me, -horses, dressage, World War II- it is told from a such a personality and in a voice once compelling and oddly comforting. The boards will be protected with a new inert 100 micron archival sleeve which is removable. Please contact us if you would like any more information or additional images.
