Item description from seller

8vo. full brown morocco, stamped in blind, three raised bands on spine, title in gilt on black leather spine label. ff, (6) leaves, CCLXXXII leaves, ff. Con le sue figure a ogni libro, opera nuovamente venuta in luce, ne piu in lingua alcuna stampata. First edition. Adams D511; Graesse, II, 34; Moss I, 407; Sander 2436; Edit16 CNCE 17205. Not in Brunet (and earlier than anything mentioned by Brunet written by Dio Cassius in any language). Previous ownership inscription in ink on verso of front free endpaper. Minor dampstaining through the covers to the pastedowns and a few of the preliminary pages along the margins. The 17th-century binding has been rebacked and reinforced at the gutters. Very minor soiling and toning to the textblock, else a near fine copy of this rare book, with Moss quoting Haym on this edition of 1533: "Edizione rara". Woodcut illustration of the author on the verso of the fourth leaf, as well as 22 other woodcut illustrations in the text throughout the book from various artists (each signed with their respected initial). Title in woodcut historiated architectural border composed of mythical creatures, knights, and suites of medieval armor. First edition in any vernacular language, with the Greek original in printed in 1548. This paramount work by Cassius Dio started being translated around 1473 and was completed most likely by 1488 by Niccolò Leoniceno. Of Dio's great work, which covers the era from the legendary landing of Aeneas in Italy to the reign of Alexander Severus, we possess only Books 36-60, which cover the years 68 BCE-47 CE. The missing portions are partly supplied, for the earlier gaps by Zonaras, who relies closely on Dio, and for some later gaps by John Xiphilinus. The facilities for research afforded by Dio's official duties and his own industry make him a very vital source for Roman history of the last years of the republic and the first four emperors. full brown morocco, stamped in blind, three raised bands on spine, title in gilt on black leather spine label.
