463p. A brown cloth hardcover book in very good condition. Mild edgewear; spine faded. Former owner's address label on front endpaper. Otherwise, clean and tight. An anti-Catholic novel written during the politically tumultuous years before the American Civil War. The author was Reuben Vose, writing under the pen name, Invisible Sam. The introduction includes an imagined dialoge between Invisible Sam and George Washington, in which the founding father advises Invisible Sam to write a novel illustrating the dangers of Catholicism and the virtues that will save the nation from secession and despotism.
