First impression of the first UK edition of the author's second novel, the first being "An Island In Time". ***Very good in navy blue cloth covered boards with gilt titles to the spine. The boards are clean, with just a couple of small faint marks to the front board. No bumps or creases - just a tiny crease to the bottom corner of the back board. No reading lean to the binding. Spine tight. Page block edges slightly creased. Internally also very good with no inscriptions. No creases or tears. Slight foxing to front and rear endpapers and pastedowns. ***In a very good colour illustrated dustwrapper, which is not price-clipped, retaining the original publisher's printed price of 15/- net. The attractively designed dustwrapper is complete - just slightly rubbed and creased at the edges, with a short closed tear to the top edge of the back panel. No serious creases, chips or tears. Inside of dustwrapper is foxed. Back panel marked, discoloured and rubbed (being a white background). Stain to inside of back panel of dustwrapper at foldover of inner flap. Cover of dustwrapper bright with only slight fading to the pink on the spine and edge of the front panel. ***202mm x 144mm. 245 pages. ***'Born in Breslau, Germany, in 1920, Ernst Pawel left his native land at the age of 13. He did menial jobs in Belgrade, where he was a refugee for three years, then travelled to Hungary, Italy and France before emigrating to the United States in 1938---During World War II, he served in North Africa with Counter-Intelligence and with Tito's Partisans in Yugoslavia as a liaison officer.' ***'The Tower is the name given to the great building that houses the insurance company in which Abe works. When Bill Norden, Abe's friend and superior at The Tower commits suicide, there are far-reaching repercussions in the lives of the Rogoffs; Abe is led to think that he himself made intolerable compromises with his environment, and he begins to try to reassert his smothered individuality. Retribution is swift.' (Quotes taken from the front flap of the dustwrapper) ***First impression of the first UK edition - uncommon in the original dustwrapper. ***For all our books, postage is charged at cost, allowing for packaging: any shipping rates indicated on ABE are an average only: we will reduce the P & P charge where appropriate - please contact us for postal rates for heavier books and sets etc.***.…
