Item description from seller

First edition in English, expanded from the German of the same year. This is Löher's account of his journey through Cyprus in 1877. It details the politics, geography, and history of the island before the Berlin Conference of 1878 meant that it would be under British occupation. It was quickly translated into English by Mrs A. Baston Joyner. Her adapted work includes Löher's narrative account of his travels and an appendix. Cyprus discusses the rivers, the mountains, the long history of the country including Romans, Byzantines, and Crusaders, education, religion, the country's primary exports and natural resources. Octavo. Map of Cyprus frontispiece, 15 engraved plates, map. Original red cloth, bevelled boards, spine and front cover lettered and decorated in gilt and black, rear cover decorated in blind, pale yellow endpapers, top edge brown. Ownership inscription of a "Cornelia Campbell August 7th 1881" to title page. A few small areas of wear to spine ends and corners, dark mark to head and foot of spine, small patch of skinning to front free endpaper from adhesion to opposite blank. A very good copy.…
