Clean, square, and tight. Pages are fresh and crisp, probably never read. First issue Dust Jacket with the required full size photo of Sinclair on the rear panel [Note: Jackets with this photo reduced in size to make room for blurbs were issued later. See the Ahouse bibliography]. THE CUP OF FURY is Sinclair's final assault in his war on alcohol. It is an important book for its many autobiographical passages concerning Sinclair's friendships with alcoholic writers and other celebrities such as Dylan Thomas, Sinclair Lewis, O. Henry, Stephen Crane, Isadora Duncan, Maxwell Bodenheim, William Seabrook, Edna St. Vincent Millay, etc. Particularly notable is the story of Sinclair's friendship with Jack London, whose decline from drinking dominates the book. Gottesman A2195. Ahouse A87a. From the Dust Jacket: "I compile a list of the drinking people I have known. Two score of them went to their doom, eleven as suicides. This is their story. 'I was raised in a virtual sea of liquor,' writes Upton Sinclair. 'First it was my father. Then no fewer than three of my uncles. Then one friend after another, all of them destroying themselves.'. THE CUP OF FURY is a documented, slashing exposà of the whiskey industry and its attempt to make drinking a 'social grace.' It is a poignant record of despair and degradation caused by drink. It is a uniquely startling and impassioned book.". First Printing of the First Edition. Hardcover. Original black cloth/DJ Not Price Clipped (3.00). Illus. by Edebohls, A. L. (jacket design). 8vo. 190pp.
