On offer here is the report of: "The Covode Investigation" as presented to the House of Representatives on June 16, 1860, a thick document of 838 pages. According to Wikipedia (with my thanks and my occasional contribution), this very large book: "The Select Committee to Investigate Alleged Corruption in Government was a select committee of the United States House of Representatives which operated during the spring and summer of 1860 during the 36th Congress. The committee was charged with a broad investigation of the administration of President James Buchanan, including possible impreachment. It was also referred to as the Covode Committee after its chairman, John Covode of Pennsylvania. While it was for the most part a partisan attempt (as the committee consisted of three Republicans and one Democrat) to embarrass the beleaguered president, the committee was suprisingly successful at rooting out fearsome amounts of corruption, treason and incompetence. The committee was terminated after submitting this its final report. In the end, the committe found that Buchanan had not done anything to warrant impeachment, but that his was the most corrupt administration since the adoption of the US Constitution in 1789." The book is bound in blind-stamped dark brown boards with gilt titles on the spine. The book includes pages and pages of testimony of witness called by the Committee. Condition: This book is in very good condition. The boards are decidedly dust-dulled and soiled and the gilt titles on the spine are a bit faded but still legible. There has been some edge wear to the boards and minor chipping to the paper covers but nothing extreme (please see the photos). Inside, the book is unmarked but someone has penciled some "x" on the leading edge of the pages. There was a small section of pages with some tiny dog-earring to the top corner (390-415) which I have straightened out. The pages are randomly soiled but I would not say that they are affected by toning or foxing and certainly all are fully legible. On some pages, you can see a light tide line as if the book came into contact with water but I suspect this is just from years of exposure to humidity as it is not uniform through the book. Both hinges are intact and the binding is tight and sound. This book is not ex-library or a remainder.…
