Sleep is surely an excellent thing, although we know remarkably little about its origins and purpose. All that we do know however is laid out for us here in this illuminating and entertaining study by Paul Martin. This is a particularly fine copy, and the cover too is in similar condition and still looks crisp and new. The binding is still perfect and all pages are clean and unmarked from beginning to end.

About the Author

paul martin studied biology at Cambridge, acquiring a First in Natural Sciences and a PhD in behavioural biology. He went to Stanford as a Harkness Fellow and then to the School of Medicine as Postdoctoral Fellow, before lecturing and researching at Cambridge University. He is the co-author with Pat Bateson of Measuring Behaviour and Design for a Life. His first solo book was The Sickening Mind, which was shortlisted for the NCR Prize in 1997.

I will begin by saying that mine is neither a conventional bookstore nor a conventional business. I have been a great reader and learner all my long life and have acquired a substantial number of books, which I began to sell off in a small way when I moved to a flat about ten years ago - and now that I am even older I am having to move once again in the next year or so, this time into an even smaller flat in a retirement community. In short, my Abe membership is a consequence of too little space and way too many books...
