This visually stunning book with over 250 full-color illustrations, many of them never before published, is based on Carl Sagan’s thirteen-part television series. Told with Sagan’s remarkable ability to make scientific ideas both comprehensible and exciting, Cosmos is about science in its broadest human context, how science and civilization grew up together.
The book also explores spacecraft missions of discovery of the nearby planets, the research in the Library of ancient Alexandria, the human brain, Egyptian hieroglyphics, the origin of life, the death of the Sun, the evolution of galaxies and the origins of matter, suns and worlds.
Sagan retraces the fifteen billion years of cos-mic evolution that have transformed matter into life and consciousness, enabling the Cosmos to wonder about itself. He considers the latest findings on life elsewhere and how we might communicate with the beings of other worlds.
Cosmos is the story of our long journey of discovery and the forces and individuals who helped to shape modern science, including Democritus, Hypatia, Kepler, Newton, Huy-gens, Champollion, Lowell and Humason. Sagan looks at our planet from an extra-terrestrial vantage point and sees a blue jewel-like world, inhabited by a lifeform that is just beginning to discover its own unity and to ven-ture into the vast ocean of space.

Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. Dust Jacket Condition: Good. 1st Edition. Random House; New York; 1980. Hard Cover. Book condition: Very Good. Dust jacket condition: Good. Unstated edition, indeterminate printing due to absence of any number line, though the copyright page does have a "9" where I would expect a number line to be. Hardcover in unclipped dust jacket. 10-1/4" tall, 365 numbered pages includes "Acknowledgements", "Appendix I: Reducto ad Absurdum and the Square Root of Two", "Appendix II: The Five Pythagorean Solids","For Further Reading" and "Index". This book has been read but is in respectable condition: the exterior has a slight lean, is reasonably clean, free of corner bumps and edge dings with very lightly bumped but otherwise undamaged spine ends; the spine itself and its lettering are undamaged (see photo); hinges are strong and not damaged in any fashion. Except for an inked name/date/city on the back of the FFEP and a 1-1/2" circular name embossed on the FFEP and the title page, the interior is perfectly clean and completely free of writing, stray marks, stains and any sort of paper damage. Not remaindered, ex-library or a Book Club edition--there is no 'slug' on the rear board and no mention anywhere on the jacket of a Book Club. The dust jacket is worn but intact and is clean and free of tears and fading; it has moderate wear along both edges with wear and slight color loss along both folds. Unfortunately, it also had masking tape, since removed, on its back side--along both edges, on both folds and along the entire width of the spine; this tape has had no visible effect on the binding and only slight staining on the end pages; and because of the dark coloring of the jacket, it has had virtually no effect on the jacket (see photo of entire jacket). The jacket is now in a mylar cover. The companion book to the very popular PBS series of the same name. Seller Inventory # BMR-2021-10-1-2
