Item description from seller

TWAIN, Mark; JAMES, Henry; et al. Old Times on the Mississippi; [together with] Roderick Hudson. [In] The Atlantic Monthly: A Magazine of Literature, Science, Art, and Politics. Volume XXXV. Boston: H. O. Houghton and Company; New York: Hurd and Houghton; Cambridge: The Riverside Press, 1875. First Appearance. Octavo (8vo), 764 pp. Frontispiece. Contemporary half black morocco over marbled boards, with four raised bands and gilt spine titling; top edge tinted. Contains the first six installments of Mark Twain’s seven-part Old Times on the Mississippi, published from January through June 1875; the concluding seventh installment appeared in August in Volume XXXVI. Drawn from Twain’s experiences as a young Mississippi River steamboat pilot, the series recounts his apprenticeship, the exacting art of learning the river, and the distinctive culture and authority of the antebellum pilots. The material was subsequently incorporated and substantially expanded in Life on the Mississippi, published in 1883. Also contains the first six installments of Henry James’s Roderick Hudson, which was serialized in twelve parts in The Atlantic Monthly from January through December 1875 before its first book edition. One of James’s earliest major novels, it follows a gifted young American sculptor taken to Rome by the wealthy art patron Rowland Mallet, tracing the promise and eventual unraveling of Roderick’s artistic career. Additional contributions include works by Oliver Wendell Holmes, Henry Wadsworth Longfellow, and John Greenleaf Whittier. Provenance: Bookplate of George Franklin Danforth (1819–1899), prominent Rochester attorney and later Judge of the New York Court of Appeals (1879–1889), to front pastedown. Contents generally clean and unmarked. Binding remains sound and square. Moderate wear to the lower board edges, corners, and spine extremities. Leaf pp. 423–424 has a large chip to the upper portion, with loss affecting the upper lines of one installment of Roderick Hudson; because of this defect, the otherwise Very Good- volume is conservatively graded Good overall.
