London: George Newnes, Limited, 1901. First Edition. Contains six consecutive installments of the first British serial appearance of H. G. Wells’s The First Men in the Moon, comprising Chapters VI–XXI and illustrated by Claude Allin Shepperson. The complete Strand serialization began in December 1900 and continued through August 1901. Also contains the First Appearances of Arthur Conan Doyle’s three Strange Studies from Life: The Holocaust of Manor Place, The Love Affair of George Vincent Parker, and The Debatable Case of Mrs. Emsley, illustrated by Sidney Paget. Also included is A British Commando: An Interview with Conan Doyle by Captain Philip Trevor, illustrated with eight photographs. Of additional literary interest is Lewis Carroll’s A Visit to Tennyson, the posthumously published 1859 letter describing his visit to Alfred Tennyson at Farringford. Large Octavo (8vo). Original publisher’s blue pictorial cloth, front board and spine decorated and lettered in gilt and black; all edges gilt. Profusely illustrated throughout with full-page and in-text illustrations. Further notable contents include Alfred Dreyfus’s My Life on Devil’s Island; Robert Barr’s The Mystery of the Expert, illustrated by Alfred Pearce; Some Personal Characteristics of Queen Victoria, illustrated from photographs, drawings, and facsimiles; and John Arthur Barry’s Sea Stories, Parts I–IV. Contents generally clean and unmarked, with occasional foxing and scattered marks. Binding remains sound and square. Cloth boards with moderate to heavy rubbing and wear; spine faded, with fraying and chipping to the crown and tail. Gilt edges remain bright.
