Item description from seller

WHITEFIELD, George. A Continuation of the Reverend Mr. Whitefield's Journal, from his Embarking after the Embargo, to his Arrival at Savannah in Georgia. London: Printed by W. Strahan for James Hutton, 1740. 1st ed. 88pp. Dbd. Minor staining to exterior leaves, else very good. $2,500.00 Howes W-374. Sabin 103542. ESTC N5697. George Whitefield (1714-1770) was an English Anglican preacher and founder of Methodism, who was a major proponent of the first Great Awakening during his travels through the British American colonies in the early 1740s. Whitefield published seven journals of his missionary travels, frequently issued in parts, as well as sermons. According to Howes' complete listing of the journals, this pamphlet comprises part five. In Savannah, Whitefield founded an orphanage, and in part due to its early financial struggles, later argued elsewhere for the importation of Black slaves into Georgia. "[Whitefield's] influence in America, entirely apart from that which he exerted in Great-Britain, was many-sided and far reaching. With his advent a religious awakening already begun was greatly stimulated and a burst of evangelical activity occurred that had a marked effect not only on the religious and social life but on the political as well.Although others contributed greatly to this movement, Whitefield was its most dynamic representative, its unifying elements and the personification of its tendencies." - DAB.…
