[4], 240 pp. Engraved frontis plate, title page in red and black with printers device. Ex the famous Lincoln's Inn Library in London. Library bound in handsome dark brown buckram with brilliant gilt to the spine, renewed end papers, lovely old Lincoln's Inn stamp at top corner of title page and final page, old blocking of marginalia on verso of title, otherwise clean and unmarked. Webbing visible in some spots. Seventy-three baudy, obscene or "saucy" stories involving sex, farting, defecation and other "facetiae." The "first joke book of the Renaissance" was compiled by Poggio Bracciolini between 1438-1450. Poggio was a Florentine scholar and an early Renaissance humanist. He was responsible for rediscovering and recovering many classical Latin manuscripts, mostly decaying and forgotten in German, Swiss, and French monastic libraries. One of his most celebrated finds was De rerum natura, the only surviving work by Lucretius. He was a keen observer of the people and society around him, had 12 or more children with his mistress before marrying a young woman and having 6 more!
