Fine condition blue linen boards with silver front cover and spine lettering contained in a fine condition price-clipped color illustrated dust jacket. Includes List of Other Books by John Kenneth Galbraith; Author Dedication; Introduction and Index. "The decade of the sixties was a busy time for John Kenneth Galbraith -- in economics, politics, and an ambassador, a literary citic, writing fiction, and serving, as he once said, as a general scold. This book is the rich harvest of these years. In economics it goes back to the Keynesian revolution with his much reprinted essay on "How Keynes Came to America." It carries the author's ideas forward to The New Industrial State and to important writing beyond. Here, on inflation, the environment, the quality of life, the causes of the curious unevenness of our economic blessings, the reasons for the revolt of the young, the transitory character of financial genius in a falling market, are some of the most influential economic ideas of our time, and, in their application to current problems, some of the most practical. After the essays on economics come those on peace -- on how he hopes the foreign policy disasters of the sixties may be avoided in the seventies, how economic development may better serve the well-being of the poor lands, how the world may be a slightly more tranquil place for all. Here Mr. Galbraith draws, sometimes with wry humor, on his experience in Asia and his experience also with the men responsible for our misfortunes there. His models of economic development, though widely published and discussed in the underdeveloped countries, are here available in the United States for the first time. In the third group of essays, the solid vein of humor which illuminates the author's work comes fully to the surface. Here is his reaction to the solemn, confident and often comic people who have crossed his path. And here too is his appreciation of such greatly amusing men as John Steinbeck and Edwin O'Connor, who were his friends. And also of others - Dean Acheson, Dwight D. Eisenhower -- of whom he has not always spoken so gently. In this section he tells of the places -- Berkeley, California; Newfane, Vermont; Switzerland -- to which he has gone (or to which he goes) with particular pleasure and where the reader now joins him for an informative and amusing tour. The diligent anthologist and editor Whit Burnett set out.to discover who among living authors literate Americans thought the best. He queried many groups.John Kenneth Galbraith was always near the top. Among nonfiction writers he was almost always the first. This is the writing that won him this reputation." - excerpt from the inner front and rear jacket flaps.…

Store description
Vero Beach Books is an antiquarian bookseller with a constantly updated inventory of rare out-of-print books, signed books, children's books, plus a large inventory of ephemeral items such as major U.S. city newspapers going back 100 years and more, golden and silver age fine condition comic books (soon to be added), and many other ephemeral items as well as much more recent popular volumes. We have been in business for 25 years, originally known as Emerson Books (named after one of our owner's favorite authors, to wit, Ralph Waldo Emerson) located back then in Westport, Connecticut. That said, we are here to serve you, to offer you fine quality items that are conservatively described so that you will always be pleasantly surprised and delighted with your purchase. Twenty-five years in the bookselling business has borne out our stellar service oriented reputation; the only difference is that now we are located in the almost always sunny and warm climate of Vero Beach, Florida. Again, we are here to serve you and, as was the case when we were previously known on ABEBooks.com as Emerson Books, we will continue to offer our very popular 100% free search service for those hard to find books rare and out of print books. Oftentimes we are also able to obtain these rare finds at very good discounts to our customers' so it is always worth contacting us in such cases!
