Item description from seller

The very scarce first edition of Robert Boyle's defence of the plain and unadorned language of the Bible against critics of its simple style. The very scarce first edition of this work. A theological treatise by Robert Boyle examining the language and literary character of the Bible. ESTC R210150 [1], A8, a5, A2-8, B-R8. Collated, complete. The final leaf, R8, is a blank, as called for. The work argues that the apparent simplicity, obscurities, and stylistic peculiarities of the biblical text should be understood in light of its original languages, historical context, and intended audience. In a full calf binding. Front board detached but present. Rear joint starting, but board is firmly held. Minor losses of calf to back strip head and tail. Front blanks tenderly attached to front pastedown. Inscription to front pastedown. Internally, firmly bound. Pages bright, with the odd light handling mark. Good Only.
