The first edition.Mill's work argues that representative democracy is the ideal form of government, as it promotes political participation, individual development, and accountability. He suggests that representative bodies such as parliaments and senates are best suited to be places of public debate on the various opinions held by the population: 'their part is to indicate wants, to be an organ for popular demands, and a place of adverse discussion for all opinions relating to public matters'.Sabine commends his suggestions surrounding proportional representation as 'among the very greatest improvements yet made in the theory and practice of government'.Four pages of adverts to the rear. In the original publisher's cloth binding, neatly rebacked. Externally, generally smart, with light discolouration to the cloth. A few light marks to the boards and spine. Minor bumping to the extremities. Torn label to the spine. Hinges are starting slightly but firm. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are very light age-toned and clean, with the occasional scattered spot. Prior owner's ink inscription to the half-title. Very Good.
