XX [From the dust jacket flaps] ?This is an explosive and provocative book. It is a study?authoritative, factual, and detailed?of a Congressional irresponsibility which is seriously endangering our democratic government. The picture of the politician as a crook is part of American folklore. But! contends Professor Wilson, the significance of a scandal such as the recent J. Parnell Thomas affair is not that Representative Thomas's clumsy efforts to cheat the government were exposed. It is that the majority of the other 434 members of the House of Representatives did not cherish the reputation of the House enough to initiate the inquiry into the highly publicized charges. CONGRESS ? CORRUPTION AND COMPROMISE is a dynamic analysis of this failure of Congress to discipline its members. The first two sections of this important book contain an examination of the most flagrant of recent Congressional scandals ? the May-Garsson affair, James Curley's escapades, Gene Cox's wrangle with FCC, Bilbo, MC. Dermott, etc. In the final section, Professor Wilson analyzes Congress's prerogatives, suggests a reorganization of our party system which will make Congress more responsible, and offers an illuminating comparison with British political ethics. A recent survey by The National Opinions Research Center revealed that five out of every seven Americans believe it impossible for a professional politician to be honest. A subsequent survey found that only eighteen per cent of American parents would like political careers for their children. This nation-wide contempt for Congress hangs like a smog over the American mind. CONGRESS?CORRUPTION AND COMPROMISE is designed to help lift this smog?not by muckraking, but by constructively exposing the foundations upon which this public distrust rests. XX Harper Hubert WILSON was an Associate Professor of Politics at Princeton from 1947 to 1977. ?A self-described ?conservative, anarchist and socialist,? Wilson provoked his students to think critically about the social problems confronting society, and to challenge the prevailing assumptions about American politics.? He died in a swimming pool accident shortly after retiring from teaching.
