Philippe Chaslin [1857-1923] French psychiatrist best known for his description and study of mental confusion; including a condition he described as discordant madness , which is synonymous with schizophrenia. Chaslin became the senior psychiatrist at the Bicetre Hospital in Paris and then at the Salpetriere. His psychiatric writings are marked by an aversion for conventional disease categories. He wrote about the influence of the dream in the context of delirious experience and about the role of primitive thinking in confusional states. The above work concerns primary mental confusion. Chaslin s chief work was Elements of Semiology and Clinical Mental Conditions was published in 1912.
