This late-career science fiction novel from Alfred Bester, The Computer Connection follows a secretive group of immortals scattered across the solar system-eccentrics ranging from a Neanderthal survivor to centuries-old geniuses. Their immortality is gained only through dying in spectacular, catastrophic ways, a process overseen by Guig, an immortal with a macabre admiration for those he "selects." When Guig targets Dr. Sequoya Guess, a brilliant Cherokee physicist, the group becomes entangled in a chain of events involving advanced technology, identity, machine intelligence, and the consequences of living forever. The story blends rapid-fire dialogue, futuristic settings, and Bester's trademark energetic style, exploring how immortality reshapes humanity, ethics, and power.
