[Cold War spy saga] FIRST EDITIONS. Ten volumes. Publisher's various coloured cloths in illustrated dust-wrappers. Contents clean, no ink names, no price clipping, text blocks gently tanned, some acceptable handling only. Very good copies. Bernard Samson is a middle-aged and somewhat jaded intelligence officer working for MI6, being the central character in three separate trilogies; Game Set and Match; Hook, Line and Sinker; and Faith, Hope and Charity. Completing the set is a novel entitled Winter, being an account of family life in Nazi German which features several of the characters appearing in the first Samson trilogy. In the 60's, Len Deighton was the chief rival of fellow Cape-published spy writer Ian Fleming, who had championed his first novel 'The Ipcress File'.
