Well-received in the United States, Kaufmann's translation was on the Harvard Law school reading list, and those of other leading law schools. The first American edition was published in 1845. It was intended to be a two-volume work, but its second volume was never published. Instead, the first edition was superseded by the second edition. Both editions are scarce. OCLC locates 12 copies of the second, 8 in law libraries (Harvard, Jenkins Law Library, Nevada Supreme Court, New York Supreme Court, St. Louis University, Tulane, University of Georgia, University of Victoria).
