Item description from seller

2 volumes. 12mo., (7 ¾ x 5). First Edition. Original boards and paper spine labels. (Partially uncut and partially unopened; spines scuffed, head of vol. 1 spine worn away, labels intact. Scattered light internal foxing, minor dampstaining at bottom fore edge of index leaves.) Provenance: Early ownership of Mary Jones. William Paul Crillon Barton was a medical botanist, physician, professor, naval surgeon, and botanical illustrator. His uncle was Benjamin Smith Barton, an eminent medical botanist and vice-resident of the American Philosophical Society. As a professor of botany at the University of Pennsylvania, Barton compiled this work as a practical field manual for students of the local flora of Philadelphia. He collected, as he said, all but perhaps twenty specimens himself and describes them in English for "the tyro". He published a variety of other related works such as the Vegetable Materia Medica of the United States (1817-18). For more information on this set, or a warm welcome to see other books and maps of our collection at 72nd Street NYC, please contact Natalie Zadrozna.…
