"Naval culture is very different from military culture. The difference is the result of four centuries of autonomy of command at sea. Michael Palmer explains this brilliantly." -- John Lehman, former Secretary of the Navy, 1981-1987. "Palmer has produced what seems to be the only work ever specifically devoted to the problems of command at sea. A highly original volume, fascinating from beginning to end." -- Martin van Creveld, author of Command in War. "Command at Sea is a lucid and engaging book which represents a much-needed new approach to the history of naval warfare. Michael Palmer's work makes interesting reading for anyone and essential reading for the professional." -- Ronald Spector, author or At War at Sea. "In this sweeping tour de force, Michael Palmer illustrates the impact that signaling systems had on command decision making during four centuries of naval combat. Citing a score of pivotal naval engagements from Kentish Knock in 1652 to Desert Storm in 1991, Palmer shows dramatically how success at sea depended of effective communication, whatever the dominant technology." -- Craig L. Symonds, U.S. Naval Academy. "Commanders at sea struggle not only with the unpredictability of natural elements but also with a shroud of uncertainty called the "fog of war." Over the centuries most admirals have yielded to the natural temptation to find in new technologies ways to assert centralized control over their fleets. But other commanders have recognized the fog for what it is: a constant level of uncertainty resistant to mere technological solution. In this grand history of naval warfare, Michael Palmer observes five centuries of dramatic encounters under sail and stream. From reliance on signal flags in the seventeenth century to satellite communications in the twenty-first, admirals looked to the next advance in technology as the one that wold allow them to control their forces. But while abilities to communicate improved, Palmer shows, other technologies simultanously shrank admirals' windows of decision. As a result, naval commanders have never had sufficient means or time to direct subordinates in battle. Successful commanders such as Horatio Nelson (1758 - 1805) and Arleigh Burke (1901 - 1996) accepted this reality. They sought solutions to the dilemmas of command in the personal indoctrination of subordinates through discussion, comradeship, and displays of trust and confidence. Such leaders created a commonality of vision and fostered a high degree of individual initiative. Their decentralized approach to command resulted in a resiliency that often provided the key to success in battle. Palmer's exciting and enlighening history reveals the myriad efforts of naval commanders to navigate the fog of war." -- from the inner front and rear jacket flaps. ABOUT THE AUTHOR: Michael A. Palmer is Professor of History, East Carolina University.…

Store description
Vero Beach Books is an antiquarian bookseller with a constantly updated inventory of rare out-of-print books, signed books, children's books, plus a large inventory of ephemeral items such as major U.S. city newspapers going back 100 years and more, golden and silver age fine condition comic books (soon to be added), and many other ephemeral items as well as much more recent popular volumes. We have been in business for 25 years, originally known as Emerson Books (named after one of our owner's favorite authors, to wit, Ralph Waldo Emerson) located back then in Westport, Connecticut. That said, we are here to serve you, to offer you fine quality items that are conservatively described so that you will always be pleasantly surprised and delighted with your purchase. Twenty-five years in the bookselling business has borne out our stellar service oriented reputation; the only difference is that now we are located in the almost always sunny and warm climate of Vero Beach, Florida. Again, we are here to serve you and, as was the case when we were previously known on ABEBooks.com as Emerson Books, we will continue to offer our very popular 100% free search service for those hard to find books rare and out of print books. Oftentimes we are also able to obtain these rare finds at very good discounts to our customers' so it is always worth contacting us in such cases!
