This fascinating, superbly illustrated book tells the story of ships, ship-building and sailing from the papyrus rafts of the Ancient Egyptians to the nuclear-powered warships and giant super tankers of today. The author traces the development of fighting ships from earliest days through the galleons of Drake and the men-of-war of Nelson to the giant battleships and aircraft carriers of World War Il. Also described are the intrepid adventurers, such as Columbus, Magellan and Cook, who discovered so much of the modern world. Ships have always played a vital role in trade and travel and tall. graceful clippers of the last century and the elegant liners are among the many passenger and cargo ships covered here.
