A complete issue of the September 26, 1903 Collier's magazine with a colored cover illustration of Sherlock Holmes by Frederic Dorr Steele featuring "The Return of Sherlock Holmes - Beginning a New Series of Detective Stories by Arthur Conan Doyle" in red. The issue fincludes The Adventure of the Empty House, which begins thirteen short stories in The Return of Sherlock Holmes collection. This issue marked the first publication of a Holmes story in Collier's with the story being published prior to The Strand Magazine (which published it in October 1903). "Public pressure forced Conan Doyle to bring the sleuth back to life, and explain his apparently miraculous survival after his deadly struggle with Professor Moriarty in "The Final Problem." This is the first Holmes story set after his supposed death at the Reichenbach Falls, as recounted in "The Final Problem" [Wikipedia]. A total of 36 pages including cover. Seven illustrations by Frederic Dorr Steele. Stapled paper wraps. A nice clean copy with no previous owners' names or other markings. 11.25 x 16 in. Seller Inventory # 8174
