COPY OF FRANK H. HAMILTON, with his signature and his notation "From the Author" on p. 3 (see photo). Frank Hastings Hamilton was the author of A Practical Treatise on Military Surgery (1861) and A Treatise on Military Surgery and Hygiene (1865), and the editor of Surgical Memoirs of the War of the Rebellion (1870-71), among other works. During the Civil War, Hamilton served as a volunteer regimental surgeon assigned to the thirty-first New York Infantry. On February 9, 1863, Hamilton was appointed medical inspector of the United States Army, with the rank of lieutenant-colonel. About Paul Eve's book: "This volume . . . presents unusual surgical problems grouped according to various divisions of the human body. . . . Among the 'remarkable' cases are blindness from worms in the eye (pages 121-22) and an amputation of the head with the patient surviving thirty-six hours (pages 758-59). There is an extensive index of cases at the conclusion of the volume. This book provides some of the most enjoyable and entertaining reading to be found in any nineteenth-century American surgical text" (Rutkow, The History of Surgery in the United States, Vol. I, GS41).…
