Contemp. quarter half calf over limp paper-covered boards; worn & rubbed, expert repairs to spine, both pastedowns torn in places. Contemp. ink inscriptions on half title 'No. 2 Saint James's/ in case Mr Stone' and 'Supposed to be by Dr. Broxholme'. ESTC N14814. FIRST EDITION; not in BL; Cambridge, Oxford, Manchester and Wellcome in UK; California State Library, Countway Medical Library, US National Library of Medicine, University of Minnesota only in US. Author attribution from ESTC. Scarce in commerce; only two second editions appearing in auction records in 1948 and 1935 and no sales records of this first edition. Noel Broxholme, 1689-1748, physician to the Prince of Wales and member of the College of Physicians, committed suicide on 8 July, 1748. This work contains 196 recipes for medical treatments: their Latin names, purpose, and remarks on dosages, suitable substitutes, and different methods for making the medicines are also recorded. Treatments listed include an electuary against a gonorrhea, a gargle for a cancerous mouth, a draught for the scurvy, the pill against the French pox, a sleeping pill, a potion against the gout, the antivenereal tincture, and many others.…
