Item description from seller

First edition. Octavo. Dark blue publisher's cloth, decorative pattern in blind with gilt centerpiece. Small ownership signature, wear to the front joint, else very good or better. Subscriber's copy, Signed and dated by William Henry Black on the front free endpaper. Includes letters by Tycho Brache, Thomas Lydyat, Charles Cavendish, John Pell, and others. Also includes the by-laws of the *Historical Society of Science*, founded by James Halliwell, an antiquary and unrepentant son-in-law of the bibliomaniac Sir Thomas Phillipps. With the formation of the *Society* and publication of this work, Halliwell advanced the history of science as an independent scholarly pursuit. William Henry Black was a prolific contributor to many journals, and a member of the *British Archaeological Association*. A handsome copy, scarce in the original boards.
