If I, as author, could write an anonymous review of my own bookhere is what I might write: In Cold Pursuit is deeper than it first appears to be. At first it appears to be simply an engaging history of one branch of medical research and an interesting detective story about how it was finally decided that viruses lead to colds. It slowly becomes clear however that this far oversimplifies the truth about colds. Colds turn out to be remarkable things. Perhaps even friendly things. But I mustn't give away too much of the story.
Because the author is a Psychologist and not an M.D. I assumed (incorrectly, it turned out) that the book would show that colds have a significant psychosomatic component. But as the opening pages of this book make clear, the story of colds is a continuous stream of suprises and contradictions. Fascinating contradictions to be sure, but "final answers" tend to be few and far between in this book, as they are in most of working science. That doesn't make the story any the less satisfying or interesting as it goes along, but it does mean that unavoidably the reader will need to reach the last page of the book before it becomes clear how much more than just the common cold has been explored here. This is not to say that every part of every chapter needs to be read to appreciate the interest of this topic. Nor is it to say the chapters of the book all have to be read in order. I found on a second reading that I had just as much fun starting in the middle and jumping back and forth as I did reading it through the first time.
Different findings described in this book will speak to different readers on different readings. Perhaps it is not giving too much away to say that doing research on the nature of colds and their means of transmission (or perhaps safer: and their means of activation) can often be fun at the same time that it is serious and important. For instance this book reports some surprising data from kissing studies done with married couples suffering colds. Mothers and their babies also offered some surprising data about colds. And there is plenty of adventure to report too, including cold research carried out inside patrolling nuclear submarines, in isolated Antarctic stations, and in the shadow of active volcanos.
This book gives us a serious and sympathetic look at colds, at science, and at some of the politics and serendipities that shape scientific research. It has a friendly, literate writing style, and it brings a reassuring message about colds and human health.
In Cold Pursuit also includes a good index together with helpful endnotes that often contain wry commentary on the text. (The penultimate endnote gives the author's email address for those who may want to write to him.) I found this book to be perfect for times of relaxed reading, particularly when I was home with a cold.

If you are a consumer you can withdraw from the contract in accordance with the following. Consumer means any natural person who is acting for purposes which are outside his trade, business, craft or profession.

Statutory right to withdraw
You have the right to withdraw from this contract within 14 days without giving any reason.
The withdrawal period will expire after 14 days from the day on which you acquire, or a third party other than the carrier and indicated by you acquires, physical possession of the last good or the last lot or piece.
To exercise the right of withdrawal, electronically fill in and submit a clear statement on our website, under "My Purchases" in "My Account". We will communicate to you an acknowledgement of receipt of such a withdrawal on a durable medium (e.g. by e-mail) without delay.
To meet the withdrawal deadline, it is sufficient for you to send your communication concerning your exercise of the right of withdrawal before the withdrawal period has expired.
Effects of withdrawal
If you withdraw from this contract, we will reimburse to you all payments received from you, including the costs of delivery (except for the supplementary costs arising if you chose a type of delivery other than the least expensive type of standard delivery offered by us).
We may make a deduction from the reimbursement for loss in value of any goods supplied, if the loss is the result of unnecessary handling by you.
We will make the reimbursement without undue delay, and not later than 14 days after the day on which we are informed about your decision to withdraw from this contract.
We will make the reimbursement using the same means of payment as you used for the initial transaction, unless you have expressly agreed otherwise; in any event, you will not incur any fees as a result of such reimbursement.
We may withhold reimbursement until we have received the goods back, or you have supplied evidence of having sent back the goods, whichever is the earliest.
You shall send back the goods or hand them over to A Good Read, Toronto, Ontario, Canada, without undue delay and in any event not later than 14 days from the day on which you communicate your withdrawal from this contract to us. The deadline is met if you send back the goods before the period of 14 days has expired. You will have to bear the direct cost of returning the goods. You are only liable for any diminished value of the goods resulting from the handling other than what is necessary to establish the nature, characteristics and functioning of the goods.
Exceptions to the right of withdrawal
The right of withdrawal does not apply to:
- The delivery of newspapers, journals or magazines with the exception of subscription contracts; and
- The supply of digital content which is not supplied on a tangible medium (e.g. on a CD or DVD) if you accepted when you placed your order that we could start to deliver it, and that you could not withdraw once delivery had started.
