Paris: Garnery, Libraire, Rue de Seine, De l'Imprimerie de Mame, Freres, 1809. Three parts. [iv], 162; 312; 34 pp. Interleaved through first section to p. 162. 12mo. (6-1/2" x 3-3/4"; 16.5 x 9.5 cm). Contemporary sheep, gilt frames with gilt corner fleurons to boards, lettering piece and gilt fillets to spine, speckled edges. Light rubbing, scuffing and a few minor stains to boards, moderate rubbing to extremities, chip to lettering piece, corners bumped. Light to moderate toning, light foxing in places, early repair to fore edges of title page and following leaf, occasional annotations in neat hand to interleaves, other, briefer, annotations to margins of text, some slightly affected by trimming. $1,000. * Promulgated in 1808, the Code d'Instruction Criminelle was a cornerstone of Napoleonic legal reform, codifying criminal procedure and famously striking a compromise between the secretive pre-Revolutionary inquisitorial system and the public, jury-led adversarial system introduced during the Revolution. Unlike the standard official edition, Garnery's version includes a vital secondary section-Motifs du Livre Ier-compiled by State Councillors Jean-Baptiste Treilhard, Pierre-Francois Real, and Louis-Joseph Faure, alongside a comprehensive analytical index. This specific copy is a remarkable working artifact of early 19th-century French jurisprudence. An early legal practitioner heavily interleaved and annotated the text, with the latest entry dated 1817.…
