Fine-looking, structurally sound hardcover, little discernible wear, bright interior, unmarked. Bright and shiny dust jacket, illustrated, little worn. With notes, bibliography, chronology and index. Replete with gloriously colorful illustrations of Schreuders' painted wooden sculptures. Big, tall, heavy quarto hardcover format, measuring 11" x 10" tall and wide, respectively. Excellent detail about 70 sculptures along with prints, drawings and pages from the artist's sketchbooks. The publisher blurb says, "This South African artist is known for her distinctive carved and painted wooden sculptures that reflect the ambiguities of the search for a post-apartheid African identity. Her work is influenced by the traditional Blolo and Colon figures of West Africa, as well as other stylistic input from medieval church sculpture, Spanish portraiture, and Egyptian woodcarving. Schreuders' personal history as a white descendent of colonial settlers in South Africa is reflected in these pieces, which are physical representations of human emotions. This book includes beautiful reproductions of Schreuders' works, two in-depth essays and a biography of the artist, making this the definitive volume on one of the pre-eminent South African artists working today." [10], 11-239 pp.Member, I.O.B.A., C.B.A., and adherent to the highest ethical standards. Additional postage may be required for oversize or especially heavy volumes, and for sets. …

Store description
Member, I.O.B.A. (the Independent On-line Booksellers Association) "Structure" versus "Agency." A phrase that has characterized much social-scientific debate. Does “structure” (the routinized regulations of kinship and marriage, work and reproduction, of race, class and gender) determine history, or is it the “agency” of fully conscious, independently acting, individuals? Structure, Verses, Agency Books isn’t going to solve the debate, but we’ll offer you lots of all three. Versus to verses—we specialize in fine, rare and collectible books, from the fine arts to the social sciences, from poetry to photography, from literature and ethnography to fine bindings and Americana. Structure, Verses, Agency Books…

Terms of sale
I've done my best to state clearly and truthfully the condition of each and
every book I have listed on-line. Sometimes, however, books change condition
insofar as they sit on the shelf for a long time, get moved by customers,
get taken to and from book fairs, and so on. If for some reason you don't
like your purchase or it arrives somehow damaged, or if it doesn't get to
you at all, you might be eligible for a refund within 30 days of the
estimated delivery date. If you've changed your mind about a book that
you've ordered, please contact me or use the "Ask bookseller a question"
link to contact me and I'll respond within two business days.
