The book is structured chronologically into four main parts: The Primitive and Prehistoric Epoch: Covers early rhythmic tools like rattles and bull-roarers, and the ritualistic origins of sound.Antiquity: Explores the instruments used by ancient civilizations in Egypt, Mesopotamia, Greece, and Rome. The Middle Ages: Discusses the migration of instruments across continents and the evolution of early European and Islamic musical tools. The Modern Occident: Chronicles the rise of the modern orchestra from the Baroque period through to 20th-century developments.
