Paperback. Condition: New. Print on Demand. This book delves into the fascinating and often hidden world of slang and "cant," the secret language used by thieves, beggars, and other marginalized groups in 18th-century England. Drawing on a variety of historical sources, the author meticulously compiles and explains a vast array of colorful and often humorous terms, offering a glimpse into the lives and subculture of those who lived on the fringes of society. Beyond mere definitions, the book explores the origins and evolution of these words, revealing how they served as a means of communication, a badge of belonging, and even a tool for deception. By illuminating this unique linguistic landscape, the author sheds light on the social realities, power dynamics, and even the humor that existed within these communities. Ultimately, this book offers more than just a dictionary of forgotten slang. It provides a window into a vanished world, challenging readers to consider the enduring power of language and its ability to both unite and exclude.
