From the Publisher
National symbols, flags and anthems, have been at the centre of many confrontations between national and ethnic groups not only in Ireland but around the world. At the same time they are a source of pride and a focus to binding societies together. The authors have interviewed people who have been closely involved as protagonists or mediators in many of the incidents which have occurred in Northern Ireland over the last twenty years. Using their accounts, the book analyses the role national symbols play in the present and could play in the future in ceremonial occasions, sport, everyday community life, street demonstrations and the work place.
