Item description from seller

"We are all backwoodsmen and barbarians together" writes Kipling as he chronicles a trip to Calcutta, a city that "holds out false hopes of some return," one that is "not wholly foreign.say rather too familiar." In 92 deckle-edged pages, with pictorial frontispiece of the author & 2 interior plates. Orig. published in London in 1891, this is the First American Edition, First Printing, from 1899. With orange cloth-covered boards decorated in stark black & lettered in red to front & spine (the latter of which is severely faded), this slim hardcover is in Good+ condition: very clean, sewn binding strong & straight, pages mildly tanned but completely save for a gift inscription dated 1902 to ffep. The lower-outer page edges show a very faint dampstain, barely evident save for on the plates. Light exterior soil & mild rubbing to extremities; no DJ. Our photos depict the Exact book you will receive, never "stock" images of books we don't actually have Same day shipping on all orders received by 2 pm (Pacific time); later orders, weekends & holidays ship very next business day.
