Second printing. A clean, tight copy. From the Preface: "One major problem posed by the use of nuclear power is the concomitant creation of highly toxic and long-lived radioactive wastes. Due to their poisonous nature and extremely long life, nearly all observers agree that high-level nuclear waste must be isolated from the environment virtually forever .Yet, as this country and others are about to embark on a vastly accelerated build-up of nuclear power plants, no assured means for the permanent containment of the wastes has been adequately proven." 50 pages. "The principal purpose of this booklet is to call attention to the nuclear waste storage problem and to promote wider citizen participation and broader public debate on whether the wastes should be generated at all and, if so, on the level of public commitment that should be made to their safe management. The booklet provides basic information about the nature, generation, and handling of radioactive wastes, the environmental and health problems posed by the wastes, and significant opportunities for concerned citizens to involve themselves in the key decisions being made now and in the next few years regarding such wastes."
