Circus/political caricature. Mazeppa on a Grey Horse . Mazeppa is the 1819 poem of Byron, about a Ukrainian/Cossack Ivan Mazepa (1639-1709) punished by being tied to a horse set free, after being caught with the wife of a count. The story was turned into a circus spectacle in Europe and the US, later made famous by the American Ada Mencken. In 1831 Andrew Ducrow opened the circus season at Astley s with Mazeppa. Here it is William IV as Mazeppa tied to the horse, leaping over a log entitled Vested interests , at the time of discussion of the Reform Bill of 1832, wolves look on. Lithograph after John Doyle 1797-1868, who signed his work as HB, the Irish artist working in London, great uncle of Arthur Conan Doyle creator of Sherlock Holmes .
