As you can see from the photos, the covers are very clean, with only a few light spots. The gilt lettering on both the front and spine is quite bright. The edges are very good shape. The two top corners are actually free of rubbing. The two bottom corners have only small spots of rubbing. The spine ends have only minor wear, a little rubbing. The page edges look quite good. The middle one has one or two small light spots. Their impact on the actual pages is negligible, a tiny bit of the tan spot just peeks over the edge of few pages. The book is square and very solidly bound from cover to cover with nicely tight pages and nicely tight covers as well. The pages are very clean. I saw no more than a few blending spots and a few specks. The pages are also in quite good shape. I saw some top corners with a vague hint of a crease. There are no turned-down corner creases or placeholder creases, nothing at all conspicuous. There are no markings or stampings anywhere in the book. There are no attachments of any kind. This is NOT an ex-library book. A previous owner signed and dated (1911) his name in pencil on the blank first front end paper (the inside covers and end papers do have a little bit of shadowing and spotting, nothing terribly significant). He also penciled short lines or checkmarks on the white margins of 20 to 25 pages, most often only one pencil mark to each of these pages. I also found two instances where he had underlined in pencil a sentence. There are no pen marks anywhere. One could, if one chose, erase the penciling. 'The eight lectures which follow were delivered at the Church of Our Father, Pawtucket, R.I., during the winter of 1893-4. Encouraged by the kind reception then accorded them, the writer ventures to submit them now to a larger circle of readers.' The titles of the eight lectures are The Church And The Life Of Men; The Church And the Education; The Church And Charity; The Church And Business; The Church And Labor; The Church And Politics; The Church And Reforms; The Church And Society. Frederick William Hamilton (1860-1940) was an American Universalist, a businessman and the fourth president of Tufts University from 1905 to 1912. Born in Portland, Maine, he received his Bachelor of Arts from Tufts in 1880 and his Master of Arts in English literature and philosophy in 1886, in addition to an honorary Doctor of Divinity in 1889 and, from St. Lawrence University, an honorary Doctor of Laws in 1906.'.
