About this Item
2 vol. 8vo. [5], vi-xv, [2], 2-407, [3]; [3], iv-viii, [1], 2-421, [3] pp. Paneled mid-nineteenth century olive calf with gilt borders on each board, gilt decorations to the turn-ins, spines in four compartments with gilt decorations and two black morocco labels lettered in gilt on each spine; all edges marbled. Marbled endpapers and pastedowns. ANB, William L. Hedges, "Irving, Washington (03 April 1783-28 November 1859)". BAL 10126. Langfeld and Kleinfeld 30. After living in Spain for over three years, Irving wrote The Conquest of Granada and The Alhambra. Irving's Granada blends historical events with literary style, as his tale outlines the events of the Catholic conquest of Spain. Irving heavily plays up the chivalrous aspects of his medieval characters, and leans into stereotypes about the community of Moors. Several historical ballads are incorporated into his story. A beautifully bound set of Irving's work of historical fiction. Minor rubbing to the extremities and an 1836 ink gift inscription, given to a recent graduate of Eton. Seller Inventory # 000012022
