Item description from seller

The author was a Dutch-born physician who, in 1938, was assigned to pre-war Peiping [Beijing] by the Rockefeller Foundation as Head the Department of Medicine of the Peiping Union Medical College. While Dr. Snapper treated the same diseases that he had observed in Western patients in past, his experience in north China at the time gave him the opportunity to observe the progression and treatment of these diseases among a population living under vastly different conditions with regard to exposure to other pathogens, as well as suffering under an extremely poor diet and hygiene environment. His observations during this period formed the basis of this detailed clinical report. Foxing on EPs as well as some foxing on first and last couple of pages of the book. Binding sound and internal pages otherwise clean and unmarked. Now rare. x, 380 pp., 137 b&w photos, index. Size: 24 x 16 cm.
