First edition, 2 volumes, 4to, pp. [4], 96; [5], 6-72; [5], 6-68; [5], 6-56; 128 engraved plates including engraved vignette title pages; contemporary diced russia, gilt-paneled spine in 5 compartments, labels wanting in 2, a.e.g.; extremities rubbed, some minor peeling of the leather, vignette title and frontispiece in volume I a little spotted, and very occasional light spotting throughout; in all, a good, sound, and clean copy. Allom's engravings, after drawings from Staunton's collection, show many places in the interior of China which were new to Western eyes, and it was considered "the best-known nineteenth-century work on the subject" (ODNB).
