Item description from seller

First edition. With city plan of Canton frontispiece. Small 8vo. Publisher's original blue cloth, blind tooled and decorated in gilt, with image of the Buddha to front panel, original cream endpapers, a.e.g., contemporary prize inscription in ink to front endpaper, one or two light marginal stains but contents very good overall, uncommon with only six copies listed in national institutions, a curiosity addition to any China collection; this title received a withering (but amusing) review in The Athenaeum for September 5th, 1857 which begins thus: "What is a popular history of China? If it be a collection of odds and ends culled from the writer knows not what quarter, and put together he cares not how, without the slightest attempt at graces of composition, but flavoured with bad puns, insipid jokes and a large amount of flippancy, - then Sir Oscar Oliphant has written A Popular History of China, and we herewith hand it to the reader". viii, 231pp. [ad].
